Dirt sitting on the paint is abrasive. When a mitt drags that grit across the panel, it cuts fine scratches. That is the whole mechanism — which is why the fix is about keeping grit off the mitt, not about scrubbing harder.
One bucket holds your soap. The second holds plain water. After every panel, rinse the mitt in the plain water before it goes back into the soap. Without that second bucket you are reloading the mitt with the dirt you just removed and rubbing it into the next panel. A grit guard in the bottom of each bucket helps more than it looks like it should.
A thorough rinse before the mitt ever touches the car takes the loose grit off. Then start at the roof and work down, because the lower panels hold the worst of the road film and you do not want that on your mitt while you are still doing the paint that shows most.
Letting a car air-dry leaves water spots, which are minerals the water left behind. Scrubbing at a dry panel with a bath towel scratches it. Use a clean, plush microfibre drying towel and blot or drag it gently — no pressure needed.
Dish soap, which strips wax. Sponges, which trap grit against the paint instead of releasing it. Old bath towels. And the brush at a self-serve bay, which has been dragged across hundreds of filthy cars.
If the swirls are already there, washing correctly stops them getting worse but will not remove them. That is what paint correction is for.
