Bottle claims are made in ideal conditions: a garaged car, mild weather, gentle washing. Almost nobody drives like that. A car parked outside in a Pennsylvania summer, washed every few weeks, driven through rain and road film, is working through that coat far faster.
Automatic car washes, by a wide margin — the detergent strips it and the brushes abrade it. After that: dish soap, which is designed to cut grease and takes the wax with it. Then heat and direct sun, road salt in winter, and anything acidic left sitting on the paint.
Look at how water behaves. Fresh wax makes water bead up tight and roll off. As the coat wears, beads get flatter and wider, then water starts sitting in sheets instead of running off. Once the sheeting starts, the protection is largely finished.

A synthetic sealant typically runs four to six months, and a proper ceramic coating is measured in years rather than months — but it needs a properly decontaminated and corrected surface underneath, and it has a cure window you have to respect. Wax is the least durable option and the easiest to reapply.
