Short answer: not an automatic one.
The spinning brushes in an automatic wash are shared by every car ahead of you, and they carry that car’s grit into your paint. That is what puts swirl marks back — the fine circular scratches you see under direct sun. A fresh coat of wax does nothing to stop it, because the damage is mechanical, not chemical. You paid to have those removed; a drive-through puts them straight back.
Automatic washes run a strong alkaline detergent so they can clean a filthy car in ninety seconds. That chemistry strips wax. A coat that should last two to three months can be largely gone after a couple of passes through a tunnel.
A touchless wash has no brushes, so nothing is dragged across your paint. The detergent is usually even stronger to make up for it, so it still shortens the life of the wax — but it will not scratch. If you need a quick wash in February, touchless is the one to use.
Two buckets, one with soap and one with plain water to rinse the mitt. A pH-neutral car soap, not dish soap. A clean microfibre mitt, working top to bottom. Dry with a clean microfibre towel rather than letting it air-dry, because the spots you see afterwards are minerals left behind by evaporating water.
Rinse bird droppings and tree sap the same day you notice them — both are acidic and will etch through wax into the clear coat if they sit. Park in shade where you have the option.
